On 30 September 2025, Microsoft will introduce changes to how certain third-party apps handle calls in Teams.

In practical terms, this means that some providers who previously offered external calling without an official Microsoft Phone System licence will need to modify their service or increase costs.

If your company uses Enreach Contact for Teams, there’s no need to worry: our calls, transfers and virtual switchboard will continue working just as they do today.

“All our telephony services for Teams will keep running smoothly, as our integrations don’t rely on the technical components Microsoft is planning to block.”

Jorge García, Product Director at Enreach

WHAT’S CHANGING IN TEAMS

From 30 September 2025, Microsoft will no longer allow some third-party applications to automatically transfer calls or add participants to calls unless a Phone System licence is in place.

Manual transfers and direct calls (Teams to Teams) will continue to work as normal.

WHY ENREACH ISN’T AFFECTED

Because our telephony solution doesn’t rely on the “technical shortcuts” that Microsoft is set to block.

As a Gold Partner, we always develop directly within the platform, ensuring your business has a stable, future-ready solution.

SOLUTIONS THAT WILL BE AFFECTED

If your company is using alternative integrations to manage calls in Teams without a Phone System licence, the following features will no longer be available:

  1. Call transfers initiated by a bot hosted in a third-party app within Teams.
  2. Adding participants to an external (PSTN) call via a bot hosted in a third-party app within Teams.
  3. Any automation that uses the ‘transfer‘ or ‘addParticipant‘ APIs.

Manual transfers and participant additions made by users will continue to function as usual. These changes only affect bot-initiated features.

SOLUTIONS THAT WON’T BE AFFECTED

Alongside our telephony solution for Teams, the following services will not be impacted:

  1. Third-party applications built on alternative technologies. Solutions that don’t rely on Graph bots or the ‘transfer‘ or ‘addParticipant‘ APIs (e.g. integrations with Azure Communication Services) can continue offering external calling without a Phone System licence.
  2. Internal calls (Teams to Teams).
  3. External calls using a Phone System licence.
  4. Call transfers manually initiated by a user (human).
  5. Adding new participants to PSTN calls manually by a user (human).

RECOMMENDATIONS IF YOUR COMPANY IS AFFECTED BY THESE CHANGES IN TEAMS

We recommend contacting your current service provider to check whether any of the features you rely on will no longer be supported after 30 September 2025.

Or if you prefer, you can explore our virtual switchboard integration for Teams. As business telecoms operators, we offer a full end-to-end solution: telephone numbers (0800, national and international) and full PBX integration within Teams.
