During these last days, the Barometer of the Technological Sector in Catalonia 2016 has been made public, in which masvoz has participated. This Barometer is a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the situation of the information and communication technologies sector in Catalonia. Each year, during each edition, the Barometer has been increasing in terms of prospective analysis of trends in the sector, becoming also a roadmap, proposals and recommendations for Catalan technological players.
The eighth edition of the Barometer of the Technological Sector of Catalonia carried out by the Technological Circle of Catalonia (CTecno) provides several conclusions. In this edition, participation has surpassed that of the previous barometers, performing more than 1,000 surveys and 27 interviews with opinion leaders, allowing studies to be carried out by technological supply and demand companies, as well as five focus groups, two of them focused training and startups. Thus, masvoz has been part of the analysis participating in the research based on interviews and in the realization of the focus group that counted with 38 participants, focused on the collection of qualitative data.
The analysis includes nine blocks that offer a more complete and contextualized view of the current situation of the Catalan technological sector and future trends. This year, the perception of the technology sector is positive and improves the valuation of the previous barometers, rising from 6.4 to 6.7. This conclusion is explained by the increase in the number of companies in the sector, the improvement in the financial situation – 62% of respondents increased their turnover, 5% more than last year -, the increase in the number of customers and Increase in wages, with the expectation of increasing further in 2016.
This analysis also shows that demand believes that the technological supply is not correctly transmitting its product strategy, increasing the impression that the sector is not mature enough and that, furthermore, evolves at a slow pace. This situation is reaffirmed by the fact that practically all companies surveyed recognize the digital transformation as a necessary process, but only 39% see their technological platform able to adapt to the challenges of the future, and less than 25% claims to have a strategic plan where technology is the key element.
The current situation, therefore, poses some challenges oriented to a digital transformation that has already begun but that is generated doubts and uncertainty. However, a large percentage of the companies surveyed say they have increased their number of employees by 2015, increased wages, and have retention and talent attraction plans.
In the analysis, the Barometer shows that the Catalan startup ecosystem is the leader in Spain. The entrepreneurial character and the Catalan talent are enhanced, being very powerful at a technical level, and all the Catalan companies surveyed recognize the digital transformation as a necessary process.
As a conclusion, digital transformation is a cultural change that has to be done with the support of new technologies. Companies have to find new ways of relating and working to explore new business opportunities and improve the service offered to their customers. In this new paradigm, people become the engine of change, and so their training and talent is one of the crucial points for a successful transformation.
In this way, there is a good dynamics in the technological sector and improvements have been experienced in previous years, although there are still some indicators that indicate that much work remains to be done. The technological sector has to make an effort to adapt to the new environment that arises if not that it wants to run the risk of being overtaken by the Digital Transformation that is already carrying out the Catalan society.
