The SIP Trunk service allows you to connect a traditional PBX to a telephone service provider using a data connection rather than primary ISDN. The main motivation for the deployment of this service in companies has been the economic due to the need to amortize the investment in an own PBX and reduce the monthly cost of the telephony (calls and ISDN lines). However, there is now an additional reason to use SIP Trunk, whenever you hire the right provider. It is a question of understanding the service not only as a mere change of telephony provider, but included within the concept of “connecting the PBX to the cloud,” which allows the access to advanced telephony features that would not be possible in the stage of traditional telephony. The high-level requirements to use SIP Trunk are relatively simple:

  • That the PBX allows VoIP interconnection, in addition to primary. In some specific cases it may be necessary to purchase from the PBX provider a specific license to enable VoIP functionality.
  • Provide data access so that calls can be made.

From a practical point of view, by the customer, it is a question of:

  • Ensuring the bandwidth required for the number of simultaneous communications, preferably with a dedicated data access and correctly dimensioned depending on the codec used for calls. For example, codecs that use less bandwidth require more processing power.
  • Allowing the communication of the client’s router/firewall with the telephony platform of the provider. That is, allowing network traffic to specified IP addresses and disables features that can interfere with VoIP traffic. This is to enable data access as a bidirectional channel to handle calls.
  • Setting properly the PBX to handle calls through SIP Trunk (as specified by the supplier). The supplier will provide detailed instructions on the technical requirements of the PBX and how it should be configured to work with its SIP Trunk.

A SIP Trunk service as a cloud-based communication solution has many advantages for businesses: cost reduction after implantation; interconnection of virtual PBX of different company headquarters, regardless of their location; easy and intuitive call management from any computer with an Internet connection through a control panel that allows active configuration and backup settings, call recording, recording messages with TTS, extracting statistics, etc.; improving productivity by connecting multiple offices and mobile workers; improving workers’ mobility; scalability on demand; service stability as it is not affected by external factors such as power outages and can be diverted to other offices or mobile phones, depending on the internal organization of the company.
