Toll-free lines are telephone numbers used by businesses that can be called free of charge from both landlines and mobiles within the country. As with all special numbers, there are regulations in Spain that businesses must comply with.

Unlike other premium rate numbers, 900 numbers are mandatory for certain businesses and the legislation is more flexible than those for 902 numbers when it comes to making calls.

Let us explain which businesses should use them and what the rules are for outgoing calls from 900 numbers.

TOLL-FREE LINES ARE MANDATORY FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE IN CERTAIN BUSINESSES

If your company provides basic services of general interest, it must use a 900 number as a contact method.

Companies that provide basic services of general interest include:

  • Water, gas and electricity utilities.
  • Financial and insurance services.
  • Postal services.
  • Air, rail and road transport.
  • Health services.
  • Sanitation and waste services.

900 NUMBERS CAN LEGALLY BE USED FOR OUTGOING CALLS

Unlike 902 numbers, which by law cannot be used for outgoing calls due to the extra cost of calling back, toll-free numbers can be used for outgoing calls without changing the caller ID as they are free to the customer.

900 NUMBERS ARE FREE TO THE CALLER

Calling a toll-free number is free to the caller and the company pays for each call.

Similarly, a call from a 900 number costs the company more than a call from a geographical number.
